Free Claude Code: Model Routing, Setup & Limitations

Understand the local model proxy, who it suits, account and cost requirements, and why the project name does not guarantee free Claude model access.

What does it do?

Free Claude Code runs a local proxy: an intermediary that sends coding-client requests to model services you configure. It offers model selection and fallback routing. The name does not make it an official Anthropic product or mean that every request uses a Claude model.

Who is it for?

It suits people who already use a coding assistant and need multiple model providers or a local model connection. If the assistant's existing official connection meets your needs, an additional proxy adds configuration and troubleshooting work.

Setup requirements and costs

Choose a compatible client and a model source you can actually access, then follow the repository's current local setup guide. Hosted providers generally require your own account, API key, or eligible subscription. Local models need an appropriate runtime and hardware.

Free in the name is not a permanent free-access guarantee. Providers control free tiers, available models, and rate limits. Paid APIs and subscriptions keep their own charges. Do not treat combined promotional quotas as an allowance immediately available to your account.

  1. Confirm that switching model sources solves a real need and check client compatibility.
  2. Follow the official local setup guide with one authorized model source; review charges and data handling.
  3. Try a small task in a test project and check tool behavior and results before daily use.

What are the limitations?

Switching models can change coding quality, tool support, and response behavior. API compatibility does not guarantee identical client features. Understand what project content passes through the proxy and reaches the selected provider.

This guide checks official documentation and routing code. It does not report an installation test or independently verify advertised savings, free quotas, or every provider's terms.

Sources and ranking

This directory lists AI development plugins with public source code and a clear purpose. Browse by task, then open an introduction to learn what a project does, who it is for, and what you need to get started. It covers selected projects, not every AI plugin.

How do the three plugin types differ?

Tool connections (MCP) let AI assistants use external tools such as browsers, code repositories and databases. MCP is the protocol used for these connections.

Reusable skills give a compatible AI assistant instructions and guidance for a particular task.

Editor plugins run inside the software you use to write code, adding AI chat, completions or suggested edits.

How does “Most starred” work?

Projects are sorted by their total GitHub stars. Stars indicate interest; they are not downloads, active users or quality scores. A skill pack counts as one project. Daily star growth is not shown without historical records.

What does “Recently updated” mean?

It uses the most recent code push, which may not be a new release. The 7-day filter checks that project update time; ranking still uses all-time stars. Each introduction shows when its star count was collected. Failed updates keep the last saved data.

Introductions are based on public project documentation. These projects have not each been installed and tested here. Check the project documentation for setup, compatibility and service costs. Refreshing this list only reads saved data; it does not start collection.
