Ponytail

dietrichgebert/ponytail

Guide a coding assistant to reuse existing code and review a change or an entire repository.

What is Ponytail?

Prepared by LessAI Tools from public project documentation

Ponytail is a skill bundle for coding assistants that encourages understanding the existing code before making small changes. It includes separate workflows for reviewing a change and auditing a whole repository.

Use it to organize checks for bugs, security, tests, performance and unnecessary code. It provides instructions, not proof that a change is correct. This site reviewed public documentation and has not installed or executed the package.

Ponytail setup documentation

What you need

  • Use a compatible coding assistant and follow its installation guide. Interactive commands need a host that can load skills.
  • The Codex plugin includes lifecycle hooks. Review them before enabling them; rule-file integrations may expose fewer commands.

Limitations and costs

  • Integrations and command support differ between coding assistants; check the current upstream guide.
  • These instructions do not guarantee correctness, security or lower costs. Review the generated code and run appropriate checks.

Ponytail use cases

  • Inspect relevant code and reuse existing solutions before adding new code.
  • Review a change for bugs, security risks and missing tests.
  • Audit a repository and prioritize findings.

Official project & documentation

The project’s original description

Makes your AI agent think like the laziest senior dev in the room. The best code is the code you never wrote.

Alternatives to Ponytail for similar tasks

Matches the main use case first, then shared tasks and stars. Setup methods may differ.

  • Superpowers — Give AI a development workflow for clarifying requirements, planning, coding, and checking results.
  • Matt Pocock Skills — Clarify requirements, improve code structure, test changes and prepare a clear record for the next agent.
  • ECC — Give your coding assistant repeatable steps for planning, tests, reviews and project memory.

Sources and ranking

This directory lists AI development plugins with public source code and a clear purpose. Browse by task, then open an introduction to learn what a project does, who it is for, and what you need to get started. It covers selected projects, not every AI plugin.

How do the three plugin types differ?

Tool connections (MCP) let AI assistants use external tools such as browsers, code repositories and databases. MCP is the protocol used for these connections.

Reusable skills give a compatible AI assistant instructions and guidance for a particular task.

Editor plugins run inside the software you use to write code, adding AI chat, completions or suggested edits.

How does “Most starred” work?

Projects are sorted by their total GitHub stars. Stars indicate interest; they are not downloads, active users or quality scores. A skill pack counts as one project. Daily star growth is not shown without historical records.

What does “Recently updated” mean?

It uses the most recent code push, which may not be a new release. The 7-day filter checks that project update time; ranking still uses all-time stars. Each introduction shows when its star count was collected. Failed updates keep the last saved data.

Introductions are based on public project documentation. These projects have not each been installed and tested here. Check the project documentation for setup, compatibility and service costs. Refreshing this list only reads saved data; it does not start collection.
